BEWARE, FOOL ,

THE EYE OF THE YIGA!

An indie, selective & private writing blog for MASTER KOHGA from the Legend of Zelda franchise ( BOTW / AOC / TOTK ) , peeled by Al since 07.23.

& CLAN CODE

ABOUT    This is a private and selective RP blog for the best guy, Master Kohga from The Legend of Zelda franchise, appearing in Breath of the Wild, Age of Calamity, and Tears of the Kingdom. While I’m more than happy to write serious stuff, but because Kohga is Kohga, things will get silly and fast for the most part. I prefer to keep things lighthearted in the tone of the games. Despite the frequent humour, remember that Kohga is a villain in non-AOC verses and can do/say things that reflect this.My blog is canon compliant wrt Kohga and the Yiga. But since they have limited canon information available, especially from their POV, I take creative liberties and expand on it with my own hcs and lore. I take heavy inspiration from Japanese culture which the Yiga are already inspired by.  GENERAL    TO NON-RP BLOGS: you may follow, but DO NOT REBLOG any of my posts. This is a roleplay blog, my stuff is not to be shared in the wider Tumblr community.Imitation is not flattery. Do not lift from my writing / headcanons / metas / etc. All art under ‘mun art’, is my own and is not to be reposted or used in any way.I rarely follow first.I frequently prune my followers to keep a clean and interested dash. I don't like 'ghost followers', people who follow and never show interest. Please only follow if you’re going to make an effort to engage. If I soft block, you’re always free to refollow, but I may not return it.I reserve the right to unfollow or block without explanation. It’s generally nothing personal and shouldn’t be taken seriously. If I notice I’ve been blocked, I’ll return it. If you don’t want me to see your content, I expect the same in return.  ACTIVITY    I’M SLOW, SLOW, SLOW!!! I CAN TAKE FOREVER. My activity is permanently sporadic. I roleplay at my own pace and write when I feel like it, so if this is a bother, then this isn’t the blog for you. I prioritize interactions with friends over others.Interacting with me is a pressure-free and obligation-free environment with no expectations regarding speed or consistency. I expect the same courtesy in return.  DYNAMICS    I'm not open to shipping unless it's with friends.Kohga is a gay man and only interested in other mature men. I don't ship Kohga/Sooga; Sooga was canonically taken in by Kohga as a child.Right now I only ship with CC’s Astor and Ganondorf and don’t foresee this changing.

CONTENT WARNINGS   Occasional discussions of fantasy racism and genocide will come up wrt to the Yiga and Sheikah's history of oppression. I'm especially critical of the imperialist narrative present in the series. I’m a TOTK hater and Hyrule sucks. ✌️ if this is going to be an issue, we will not get along.  INTERACTION    I only interact IC-ly with mutuals, but anyone can follow. I don't mind if non-mutuals send in questions or reply to my posts, I enjoy hearing from people.Don't reblog memes/aesthetic/musings from me, go to the source. Start a new post to reply to an ask, don't reblog it. Softblock to break mutuals . I will block you if you unfollow without removing me as a mutual. The best way to interact is through prompts or random asks. I can’t promise I'll answer everything. Sometimes I simply don’t have an idea, or it doesn’t fit.  NOS    18+ followers only. Don’t be a bigot or a jerk. I’m here to chill and have fun and would like my dash to reflect that. No drama, no discourse, no hate, just be decent to your fellow humans. If it sucks hit da bricks.Don't be fatphobic towards Kohga, even in-character.I don't care for fanon. Some of it is OK, but I refuse to treat popular fan ideas of the Yiga like they're the only acceptable interpretations. We do not all interpret things the same way. SO, please leave common assumptions at the door and take the time to acquaint yourself with my hcs and writing.I will not write Kohga/The Yiga as gratuitous villains or inherently evil. They are a chaotic neutral, morally grey group, and all 'villainous' actions taken follow their own motivations and not Because They Can™.I have no interest in interacting with anyone who portrays the Yiga Clan as a cult.  WRITER    I'm Al, 25+, they/them. I’m chronically ill; this heavily affects my concentration and energy levels. I'm not a big ooc talker and have a low social battery. I tend to get overwhelmed in chatty settings. I may need some time to get back to or might leave you on read. It’s never personal, and you’re free to poke me again.

& THE TOP BANANA !

Master Kohga is the beloved Leader of the Yiga Clan. At first, he may seem like a bumbling joke due to his flair for theatrics and general lack of impulse control, but he is the strongest banana out of the bunch with a smart head on his shoulders. While first appearances may suggest otherwise, Kohga does take his leadership seriously in his own peculair way. He prefers spending most of his time loafing about and napping unless he's sufficiently motivated to take action. He'll gladly flex his power and bust out some impressive moves, but he'd much rather avoid getting his hands dirty and prefers to leave most tasks to his underlings. But don't be put off by his theatrics and lackadaisical attitude, Kohga is by far the strongest Yiga for a reason—with mastery over ancient, advanced techniques that would take most people dozens of years to even grasp. And it is for this, and many other reasons, that he's earned the deep respect of the clan.Kohga possesses a larger-than-life persona that commands attention wherever he goes: he's comical, bombastic, informal, boisterous, and quick to lose his temper. His unorthodox charisma and unbridled enthusiasm have earned him the adoration of even the coldest Yiga. His endearing, goofy personality subsequently makes him universally adored by all of the Yiga Clan. He's simply the kind of guy that's hard to hate.Kohga is known to possess many secrets about the Sheikah and the long history of Hyrule, knowledge thought forgotten and lost to time. Despite how loud, theatrical, bumbling, and egotistical he can be, he keeps mum about what he really knows, and there is a general impression that Master Kohga harbors far more knowledge than what his otherwise comical exterior suggests.

Although Kohga appears largely lazy and self-centered at first glance, at the end of the day, it's a loyalty that goes both ways with his clan. Kohga cares deeply for the well-being of his clan in kind, but he has a lovable sort of brusqueness about him which he likely uses as a means of hiding how much he truly cares about them. Make no mistake, you mess with the Yiga Clan, and you mess with him.Kohga is a fairly childlike character at his core, and often requires his underlings to keep him on task as he's easily distracted and pulled away from focus. Though he is depicted as a goof, Kohga is an incredibly spiteful person and is more than capable of holding a grudge until the end of time. At times, he comes off as a bit of a flake, if not a coward, but if the people he loves are in danger, he's willing to risk his life for them and fight tooth and nail alongside his clan to keep them safe.Kohga (and the rest of the Yiga Clan) harbors a strong, long-standing hatred against the Hylian Royal Family who betrayed and oppressed his people eons ago. The Yiga Clan supports the rise and revival of Lord Ganon if that's what it takes to bring about Hyrule's end. While aligned with Calamity Ganon and a devoted follower in his name, Kohga's interests begin and end with the destruction of the Hylian royal family. His primary motivation in life is little more than the preservation of his clan’s well-being, longevity, and happiness— whatever the cost.

& BACKGROUND

& 10,000 years ago...

The kingdom of Hyrule has flourished since ancient times, but its history is inextricably intertwined with a being who brings ruination and is sealed away, only to revive and bring calamity again and again —a being known as Ganon.But. Ganon is not the only constant in the cyclical history of Hyrule. In every age where Ganon rises up to cause chaos, there are born two defenders fated to protect the kingdom: a warrior with the soul of the hero and a sacred princess who is the goddess reborn. Together, the two are able to repel Ganon, allowing the kingdom of Hyrule to flourish. The kingdom became so culturally and technologically advanced that even the monsters that roamed Hyrule no longer posed a threat to its people, but Ganon inevitably revived and threatened to destroy everything they had built. No matter how advanced the kingdom had become, Ganon could only be sealed away by the chosen hero and the sacred princess who held the blood of the Goddess Hylia. The Sheikah, in service to Hyrule's royal family, sought to aid the chosen hero and the princess in their fated task by developing mechanical soldiers known as Guardians and four gigantic weapons called Divine Beasts that were piloted by Champions. The Guardians protected the hero and the princess, while the Divine Beasts' attacks suppressed Ganon's power, The hero then struck the final blow with the Mater Sword while the princess sealed Ganon away, thus ushering in a new age of peace.Or so one thought. . .

& Enter, Kohga...

Born 10,000 years in the past in a far older settlement of Kakariko Village to Sheikah parents with a long history of mastery in the martial arts, Master Kohga was to be one of the hundreds of monks sealed in the Sheikah Shrines in the aftermath of the First Calamity to guide the future hero against the impending battle against Calamity Ganon when it would inevitably return to bring destruction to the Kingdom.Kohga was never particularly enthusiastic about the role, nor was he one to sit still for long during training; he could never say no to an extra banana (or five), and was often found slacking off or napping during training with his peers. However, under all that blasé attitude laid a hidden genius not to be underestimated. It was shortly before Kohga was to go into his own shrine that the King of Hyrule's fear over the Sheikah's superior technological prowess reached its climax. In one fell swoop, the king's ever-growing fear had mounted into a full-scale, oppressive decimation of the Sheikah out of paranoia of an imagined betrayal. The Sheikah's laboratories were closed, research was prohibited, and data was destroyed. Their best researchers were expelled from the kingdom and monitored. Any Sheikah who dared oppose this order was met with severe punishment, including imprisonment... or worse.

Kohga would have none of it, fled his shrine, and gathered what few Sheikah who actively opposed that oppression to fight back. Choosing the abandoned Kakariko as their stronghold to fight the marching Hylian Army, they were crushed, and Kohga gathered what little tech he could and fled with the survivors to the edges of the world where the Royal Army could not find them, hiding among the shadows. They lived as nomads for years and years, scraping up what little they could just to survive, before finding an abandoned ruin among the edges of Gerudo Desert to at last call their home.Kohga’s rage at what happened to his people would never vanish and festered like a flame over the centuries even as his memory faltered with age. That hatred burned and burned as ever before. He would not forget. He would avenge his people and make the Goddess Hylia and her blood pay for her betrayal after all they, his people, had done for them since the dawn of Hylia's time. That the goddess could not bat a pitying eye upon them, grant them even a shred of mercy was never lost on Kohga. They would not be servants to a goddess who saw them as little else but beings born to serve her will. From the dark, the shadow folk would rise again to claim their place in a world reborn from the Calamity’s ashes, free from the shackles of the gods. ...Or so that is what they had long believed and told themselves. Alas, history is oft never so kind. Had the goddess truly ever smiled upon them before?

The inverted eye is blind to Hyrule's lies. Beware, fool, the Eye of the Yiga.

& THE YIGA CLAN

A group descended from a rogue faction of Sheikah who split off from the main tribe 10,000 years ago after the King of Hyrule abolished their technology and subsequently began to oppress them, forcing the Sheikah into exile from the Kingdom. Any who dared oppose the King's decree was met with severe punishment. This group violently resisted the king's decree and has held a strong resentment towards the Royal Family and Kingdom of Hyrule since.Little is known about the Yiga Clan's culture and history, mostly due to their secretive nature and a lack of publicly available information on them. They have kept hidden for generations, living among the shadows like the Sheikah of old. They specialize in assassination and covert operations—the Sheikah's original dark purpose. They are said to venerate Calamity Ganon, but seem to hold more allegiance to their Master but share the common goal of eliminating the chosen hero and goddess' bloodline. The Yiga Clan hideout is a vast space comprised of over 300 members, with its sole hideout located within the Gerudo Desert's Karusa Valley in an old Gerudo archaeological ruin they snuck into and made their home centuries ago. It has been renovated to resemble an outdoor village within a natural cave system that spans the length of the Gerudo Highlands beneath. It is the only place the Yiga call 'home'.

& FROM A YIGA CLAN NOTEBOOK

  • Creating a Champion states that the title “Kohga" is passed down for each leader of the Yiga Clan; this is mostly a fabrication on Kohga’s part to throw people off the fact that he’s really, really old and the original Kohga who founded the Yiga Clan. However, it's not utterly a lie, as Kohga’s ancestors were all called Kohga and inherited the name when he came of age to earn it.

  • Kohga comes from a long line of masters in martial and esoteric arts handed down to him from the generations in his family. It’s one of the many reasons he was selected to become a monk to help guide the chosen hero to defeat Calamity Ganon’s return. However, due to his prolonged age, he has become increasingly rusty with his techniques. He is still a force to be reckoned with in battle, particularly when he actually applies himself.

  • The Yiga Clan is very much like a tight-knit found family. People are born and raised in the hideout and it functions essentially the same as any village (and is more or less the same size as one). The Yiga are a unique ethnic group of their own that split off from the Ancient Sheikah several millennia ago. A majority of the Yiga are descended from the same outcasts and nomads that fled the persecution that exiled them in the first place, however, one’s race or background matters little and the Yiga are always glad to take in others so long as they prove their skill and loyalty. In fact, the Yiga are notorious for taking in the strays, shunned, and otherwise outcasts of society.

  • Despite claiming allegiance with Ganon out of a desire to oppose the only other force that seeks to destroy the Royal Family, the Yiga don't truly 'worship' Ganon in a traditional sense, with various members having differing beliefs and attitudes. Despite this, they retain many spiritual practises from their ancient ancestors. Ancestor honoring is a huge part of their culture. As stated in Creating a Champion, Master Kohga was heavily inspired by the Obon Festival and other matsuri/temple festivals that occur in Japan, which often focus on honoring one’s ancestors. Thus, the Yiga place a huge amount of emphasis on honoring their ancestors.

  • Yiga children are taught from a young age to hide and blend in, usually through games of hide and seek, and do so better than most adults. The moment any sort of danger arises they vanish in an instant. Raising young Yigas is very much a community effort. The Yiga, in general, cooperate with a strong collective and communal attitude—it takes a village.

  • Kohga is amazing with children, he is the Weird Uncle among Yiga kids (and children in general). He should never be trusted to babysit because he’s a terrible enabler and can’t say “no” to a kid. He loves them and fits in right among them.

  • Despite being a lazy, somewhat selfish son of a gun who’d rather have his clan mates do all the work, Kohga really does care about his clan at the end of the day and that loyalty is a fierce one that goes BOTH ways. He is the leader for a reason, and his inexplicable charisma is not the only thing that keeps them together and united under him. Hurt one Yiga and you hurt them all. They live to serve and protect themselves first and foremost, and that comes before any other goal of theirs.

  • Yigas rarely remove their masks or show their true faces because revealing their identity could easily be used against them and the rest of the clan. This is also why they wear identical uniforms and dye their hair black to make it impossible to guess their numbers and identities should that be used against them. They operate as a mysterious collective from the shadows. Impossible to pinpoint and understand. Thus, when they can freely remove their masks, they can truly be comfortable and relaxed. It is never a small feat to be shown a Yiga’s face.

  • Kohga knows each and every member of the Yiga by heart, it’s why he’s able to parse out a Yiga-disguised Link so quickly (not that he’d forget his arch nemesis that easily.)

& TIMELINE BRANCHES

& AGE OF CALAMITY

Kohga and the Yiga Clan ally with Calamity Ganon's prophet, Astor, and plot to revive the Calamity during the events of AOC.After the Yiga Clan suffers a terrible betrayal—and nigh obliteration—at the hands of Astor, Kohga feels he has no choice but to surrender to the Hyruleans upon seeing his clan sacrificed like lambs to a slaughter to revive the Blights and empower Calamity Ganon.Kohga approaches Zelda shortly after she awakens her power, begrudgingly asking to join her forces and the kingdom he despises so he may get revenge for his fallen friends. To his surprise, she accepts his plea, and the two sides unite as one. Now the people of Hyrule and their former enemies must adjust to their new allies and work together to defeat their common enemy.Master Kohga has been keeping himself unusually busy since then, joining his clan on the front lines more often than he's ever done in the past. Nothing tastes as sweet as revenge!

& AFTER THE CALAMITY

Post!AOC. After defeating the Calamity, the Yiga lead efforts to restore their hideout to its former glory. Instead, Princess Zelda offers reparations as thanks for Master Kohga's help in defeating the Calamity, and together the two leaders and their people set off towards Faron Woods to find the Yiga a true home to call their own and work towards peace talks for a future where the Yiga can reside as a part of society. To think that he and the Hylian Royal Family would ever work hand in hand, he couldn't say he ever saw this coming, not in a hundred years!

& modern

Modern verse Kohga is a crypto hacker mob boss, head of the Yiga Clan yakuza, and wanted by every international government, never once able to be pinned down by the authorities. He moves his invisible hands across the world all from his cozy ass office desk. His HQ is hidden beneath a kabuki theatre he runs and performs at as an incredibly famous actor alongside his lackeys, while no one knows any better that he's the infamous leader of this crime family.

& BREATH OF THE WILD

Master Kohga has been riding a high since the Calamity struck 100 years ago, spending most of his time loafing around the hideout whilst working behind the scenes to see Link disposed of upon hearing of the hero's return to the living, in which he's sent out his Yiga underlings to scour the land in search of the hero.Until the little pest himself shows up to quite literally steal their thunder... but it's the perfect opportunity to see Link fall himself! Alas, the only one who falls here is Kohga as he knocks himself into the bottomless pit after the long-awaited showdown with Hyrule's Champion.

& TEARS OF THE KINGDOM

Miraculously surviving his un-glorious fall into the Depths some years prior, Master Kohga is back and more motivated than ever before! Over the intervening years, Kohga has surveyed the entire Depths before anyone else. He and the Yiga have subsequently scattered their forces across the Depths in search of the ultimate weapon to offer to the Demon King and bring the world to its glorious 'end'.All the while, he and the Yiga Clan create and innovate a variety of devices using their technological heritage from the newly discovered Zonai technology to take Link—and the kingdom—down for good.

& Destined for Darkness

Villains Win : AU in which Astor and Kohga are victorious in their plot to revive Calamity Ganon, eventually leading to the return of the Demon King Ganondorf in the flesh, and the long-awaited downfall of the Kingdom of Hyrule to usher in a new world and era. For his dedication and loyalty, Kohga is selected to serve alongside Ganondorf as his spymaster, with the Yiga as a mercenary intelligence force that seeks to bring down what remains of the Kingdom and ensure Ganondorf’s proper place in this new era.All the while, he and the Yiga Clan create and innovate a variety of devices using their technological heritage from the newly discovered Zonai technology to take Link—and the kingdom—down for good.
